6V6 transmitter addendum
This radio transmitter as designed in the 1940's was meant to use 3.5 MHz crystals for both 80 meter and 40 meter operation. On 40 meters, with today’s band plan standards, 40 meter operation will likely be chosen between the low end of the band 7.000 and 7.040 MHz. Crystals in the range of 3.5000 to 3.520 MHz will provide a second harmonic for the 40 meter CW portion of the amateur band. We are looking for a dependable source of suitable 3.5 mHz crystals. Meanwhile, a simple modification to your Remember When kit will allow use of 40 meter crystals on 40 meters. The modification requires adding a second mica capacitor in series with C1, in the cathode resonant circuit. This capacitor, labeled C1x in the illustration is approximately 500pf. It changes the resonant circuit to 40 meters. The circuit must be restored to its original condition for 80 meter operation of course. This can easily be accomplished by soldering a temporary jumper across C1x. Any modification of this nature should be checked for proper operation before transmitting on the air. Pastime Projects sells 40 meter crystals on 7.03 and 7.04 MHz for use in this radio with this modification. We also sell an 80 meter crystal on approx 3.58 MHz. for 80 meter operation.
